Venice is a small beach community located between Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey. It is featured in many movies and TV shows, and is known to attract tourists from all over the world.
Venice California was a one man's dream of a place to resemble Venice, `Italy. In 1900 Abbot Kinney founded Venice, California. At first Venice was a romantic network of canals but Kinney's idea never really worked, and with the arrival of cars and freeways to LA the canals were abounded. Most of the canals were filled in and today the remaining canals are a part of a beautiful neighborhood.
In fact, Venice Beach is the kind of place, which tends to write its own history. During the 60's it became the home of the flower children of the 60's. The 'free spirit' feel of Venice had a major role on its history and a good host to many rock concerts. Famous people such as Jim Morrison and the Doors made Venice Beach their home.
In 1972 the city built a long bike path all through to Santa Monica, and when outdoor roller-skating became popular, Venice Beach was declared "The roller skating capital of the world". Along with the outdoors bikers and skaters came the street performers, the food stands and the shops. Venice's artists painted the walls with colorful murals and Venice Beach became one of the most popular attractions in Los Angeles. But no doubt, the most attractive feature of this beach is the boardwalk. Venice Beach is mostly famous for its boardwalk featuring unique and unusual street performers, palm readers, shops and restaurants, a basketball court, a playground and of course "muscle beach".
Venice is a creative gathering spot. Many fine artists, architects and entertainment companies have local studios and offices. There are many art shows/openings, little theater and other night spots featuring local talents.
One of the "must see" spots in Venice is the Venice Canals which originally were built as a mean of transportation with Venice Italy in mind.
